The manga has been running in Hakusensha 's Melody magazine since 2005, and Viz Media will begin releasing the manga in North America this August. Ōoku was nominated for Japan's prestigious Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize for the third year in a row last month. The manga was also nominated for the first Manga Taisho Awards last year. Japanese pop culture news site Comic Natalie reports that Fumi Yoshinaga’s acclaimed historical fantasy manga series Ooku will be adapted into a live action feature film. Fuminori Kaneko, director of the live action Kisarazu Cat’s Eye and Ikebukuro West Gate Park television series, will begin shooting the film next spring. The 2005 and ongoing manga is set in an alternate history medieval Japan in which a disease has decimated the male population, leading to a matriarchal society.
